Fire Fatality in Elkhorn City, KY

An image of (left) Fireman Jerry Bee and (right) Chief John Moore, of the Elkhorn City Fire Department,  inspect the stove for evidence(Pikeville, KY) - On January 31, 2005 at approximately 0547 hours Kentucky State Police received a call of a residential fire on Bridge Street of Elkhorn City.

Elkhorn City Fire Department and the Kentucky State Police responded finding the victim, Ray Puckett, had been unable to escape the fire. The incident was apparently the result of an accidental cooking fire. Foul play is not suspected. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cooking Fire Prevention Tips:

  • Never leave hot stove unattended.
  • Maintain a clean work area around the stove. Remove all paper, cloth and combustible items.
  • Replace old cooking oil on a regular basis.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher near the cooking area.
