Airplane Crash in Trigg County, KY

Date of News Release: 11/24/2005

(Trigg County, KY) - Alfred Eckles III stated he took off from Hopkinsville, KY at approximately 1120 hrs. Aircraft was flown to Cadiz area, then Eddyville area. Mr. Eckles completed approximately 5 touch and go landings at Lake Barkley State Park airport, then proceeded to US68 Canton Bridge area. Mr. Eckles then returned to Lake Barkley State Park airport for approximately 2-3 additional touch-and-go landings. On last touch and go, during crosswind turn, Mr. Eckles stated he experienced loss of power to engine (though prop was still turning). At about 500 feet elevation, Mr. Eckles turned into wind, released radio mayday, and attempted emergency landing. Mr. Eckles cleared trees and landed aircraft in body of water (Lake Barkley). Upon crash, subject opened aircraft door and left craft, pausing momentarily on aircraft wing before swimming approximately 200 feet to shore. Mr. Eckles flagged down motorist and was taken to Lake Barkley lodge area to summon assistance.
