Hazardous Materials Incident on Wendell H. Ford Parkway
Date of News Release: 05/21/2005
(Hickory, KY) - At 9:00 PM, Post 1 received several 911 calls advising of a motor vehicle accident involving a commercial tanker truck at Wendell H. Ford Parkway, mile-maker 2 Westbound.
The investigation revealed that the commercial vehicle had struck a boat that had detached from a trailer being pulled by a truck. The commercial vehicle's oil pan and fuel tank were ruptured causing the tractor to be engulfed in flames.
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes from the 0 mile-maker to the 4 mile-maker of the Wendell H Ford Parkway were closed from 9:28 PM until 9:53 PM. At approximately 9:50 PM the fire was extinguished, and it was officially determined that the tanker was carrying methylene diphenyl diiscoyanat and liquid nitrogen but they did not ignite. At 11:30 PM all lanes of the Wendell H Ford Parkway were reopened.
Kentucky State Police was assisted on scene by Lyon County EMS, Lyon County Rescue/DES, Eddyville Fire Department, Kuttawa Fire Department, Kentucky Division of Water, and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation continues by Tpr. Chris Smith.
