The Kentucky State Police in connection with local banks are releasing an alert warning of a telephone scam. Victims are being contacted by telephone and being advised that they are with the security department of the victim's bank. They request the routing number and account number for the victim's account for verification and security purposes. A variation of the scam is that the caller represents themselves as an employee of a prescription drug service and request the bank account number to sign you up as a member to receive discounts on your prescription drugs. Once the offender obtains the account numbers, he can access the account and withdraw funds from the account.
It has been requested of the State Police to issue this notice and remind the public that banks will not contact you by telephone and request your account information. They already have the information. The State Police cautions everyone not to disclose your personal information, credit and debit card information or bank account numbers to anyone that contacts you by phone.
If this happens to you attempt to get the name of the caller, the business name and a phone number for the company. You can then advise the caller that you will call them back. You can then contact your bank at their locally listed number. You may also report the incident to your local police department.
