Arrest of Escapees from Clinton County Jail

Date of News Release: 06/23/2005

(Columbia, KY.) - After several days of being on the run, two escapees from the Clinton County Jail are back in custody. Mark Phillips and Maria Braswell were arrested Wednesday evening around 7:00 PM at a residence in the 1880 area of Cumberland County, not far from the Clinton County line. Mark Phillips was charged with Escape 1st Degree and Assault 3rd Degree. Maria Braswell was charged with Escape 1st degree. Additional charges are pending on Maria Braswell for assaulting a Cumberland County Deputy Sheriff during their arrest.

The Kentucky State Police and local agencies received several tips of possible locations during the time they were on the run, one of which resulted in the recovery of the vehicle they used to escape in. On Wednesday the Clinton County Sheriff received information of a possible location on the escapees. After additional investigation by the Kentucky State Police, with assistance from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department, the exact location of the residence was located. Several officers from the Kentucky State Police along with a deputy from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department went to the residence and made the arrest. Both attempted to flee, however Braswell was arrested in the downstairs area of the residence and Phillips was located hiding in a crawl space in the attic.
