Date of News Release: 05/12/2005

On Monday, May 9, 2005 at approximately 1:00 a.m. Kentucky State Police received a complaint of a small child that was abandoned in the Ham Hollow area of Clay County. Troopers Jason O'Bannon and, Chuck Johnson responded to the scene and, upon their arrival they found a 5 year old female wondering around four houses down from the residence she should have been at. Troopers took the small girl back to the residence she had come from and, searched the residence inside and, out and, were unable to locate anyone.

Troopers located the father on Granny's Branch and, the father stated that the child and, the mother were supposed to be spending the night with her Aunt Wanda Whitehead on Ham Hollow.

Approximately 1 hours after receiving the initial complaint Troopers found both the mother Loretta Smith and, Aunt Wanda Whitehead back at the original residence on Ham Hollow. Trooper Johnson arrested Wanda Whitehead for DUI and Trooper O'Bannon arrested the mother Loretta Smith for abandonment of a minor, which is a Class D felony.

Social services were notified and, the 5-year-old was released to her father. Both women were lodged in the Clay County Detention Center.
