D.U.I. Stop Leads To Drug Arrest in Clay County

(LONDON, KY) - On Wednesday, March 9,2005 at approximately 9:30 p.m. Kentucky state Police Trooper Nick Metcalf while on routine patrol on KY 80 approximately 1 mile west of Manchester stopped a 1991 red Toyota for suspicion of DUI. After numerous roadside sobriety test were failed Trooper Metcalf arrested James E. Smith age 36 of Manchester charging him with DUI and failure to wear a seatbelt.
A passenger in the vehicle Brian E. Baker age 32 of Tyner, KY was charged with alcohol intoxication. While transporting the driver to the Clay County Memorial Hospital for a blood test the passenger of the DUI vehicle stated to Trooper Metcalf that he had swallowed approximately 7 grams of cocaine that was in a baggy. Trooper Metcalf immediately took the passenger Brian E. Baker to the Manchester Memorial Hospital for medical attention where the baggy of suspected cocaine was retrieved from Baker by medical staff in the emergency room and, turned over to the Kentucky State Police for evidence in the case. Brian E. Baker was charged with alcohol intoxication and, possession of a controlled substance 1st.
