Trooper Involved Shooting in Garrard County

(Richmond, KY) - On 12-11-2004 at 1933 hours, Trooper Sonny Dunaway of the Kentucky State Police Post 7 Richmond, conducted a traffic stop on KY 954 in the Cartersville area of Garrard County.
During the traffic stop a male subject exited the vehicle from the passenger side, produced a knife and took the female driver hostage. With the assistance of Trooper Dunaway, the female was able to break free from the suspect. The suspect attempted to flee the scene up Causey Lane. The suspect attempted to gain entry into a residence on Causey Lane still armed with the knife. While on the front porch of this residence, the suspect attempted to stab Trooper Dunaway. The suspect was then shot and fatally wounded by Trooper Dunaway.
The Garrard County Coroner, Darrell Hodge, pronounced the suspect deceased at 2027 hours at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted at 0800 hours on 12-12-2004 at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. Victim's next of kin have not been located or notified at this time.
Trooper Dunaway was not injured during the incident.
Case remains under investigation.
