Death Investigation in Marion County

(Columbia, KY) - Kentucky State Police Troopers and Detectives, along with officers from the Marion County Sheriff's Department and the Lebanon Police Department responded to a complaint on KY Hwy 55, north of Lebanon. 26 year-old, Charles Kevin Lanham of Lebanon forcefully entered a home occupied by 21 year-old Margaret L. Tungate and 22 year-old William R. Rakes Jr. Lanham was armed with a handgun, which he fired several times at the occupants inside the home. Lanham then assaulted Tungate and Rakes and detonated a homemade explosive device, causing a small fire. Rakes managed to escape from the home and flag down a passing Kentucky State Police Detective. As officers approached the residence, Lanham apparently shot himself once in the head with a large caliber handgun. Margaret Tungate then fled the home.

Charles Kevin Lanham was pronounced dead at Springview Hospital in Lebanon by the Marion County Coroner.

William R. Rakes Jr. was treated at Springview Hospital, for injuries he sustained in the assault and while escaping from the home.

Margaret Tungate required no medical attention.
