Suicide Investigation in Ashland

Date of News Release: 11/21/2004

(Ashland, KY) - Kentucky State Police in Ashland are conducting an investigation into the death of John R. Burroughs of Worthington, Ky. Around 1553 hours, the Kentucky State Police were called to assist Worthington police reference to the above subject threatening to do harm to himself.

Upon arrival, troopers located Burroughs outside his residence in an out- building with a firearm aimed towards himself. After a lengthy negotiation with Burroughs in an attempt to get him to surrender his weapon, Kentucky State Police Detective Lieutenant Elizabeth Ousley attempted to disarm Burroughs but he was able to gain control of his weapon and shoot himself in the head.

The subject was taken to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and later transferred to Kings Daughters Medical Center where he later died.

No officers were injured during the incident. An autopsy is scheduled next date at the state medical examiners office in Frankfort, Ky.

The incident is still under investigation by LT. Eddie Johnson.
