Second Arrest Made in Assault of Child - Laurel County

(LONDON, KY) - A second arrest has been made in the investigation in to the assault of an eighteen month-old, which occurred on Saturday, March 20, 2004 in Laurel County. On Wednesday, March 24, 2004 Kentucky State Police Detective John Yates obtained a warrant on Kevin Lynn Kirby age 37 of Berea, Kentucky (boyfriend of Nerissa Brumley) charging him with Assault 1st degree. At approximately 12: 49 p.m. officers from the Berea City Police arrested Kevin Lynn Kirby without incident. Kevin Lynn Kirby was returned to London where he was officially charged and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

The investigation began on Saturday, March 20, 2004 approximately 12:00 a.m. when the Kentucky State Police in Richmond received the report of an eighteen month old male which had been brought to the emergency room at the Berea Hospital in Berea, Kentucky. Troopers from the Kentucky State Police from the Richmond Post responded to the hospital at which time it was determined that the child was a victim of abuse, which had occurred in Laurel County.

Detective John Yates from the London Post responded to the hospital and after further investigation arrested Nerissa Brumley age 22 of London. Nerissa Brumley the child's mother has been charged with Assault 1st degree and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center in London. The child (name being withheld) was treated at the Berea Hospital and later flown to the UK Medical Center in Lexington. The condition of the child has improved but still remains in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Detective John Yates is continuing the investigation.
