Trooper Island Holds 27th Annual Cunningham Memorial Bass Tournament

(Albany, KY) - The 27th annual Cunningham Memorial Bass Tournament for Trooper Island was held October 29th and 30th on Dale Hollow Lake. Teams coming from all over Kentucky to participate in the annual event began arriving on Thursday and Friday in preparation for the event. The two-day event began on Saturday at 7:00 am with the weight in at 5:00 p.m. back at Trooper Island. On Sunday the tournament resumed at 7:00 a.m. and final weight in at 1:00 p.m. with a winning total of 13lb 2oz from the team of Anderson and Jefferies.
The Cunningham Memorial Bass Tournament is held in honor of Fallen Kentucky State Police Trooper Clinton Cunningham who was ambushed and shot on February 11, 1979 in Franklin County. Trooper Cunningham was the 19th Trooper to have died in the line of duty.
In 1965 the Kentucky State Police developed Trooper Island on Dale Hollow Lake near the Clinton-Cumberland County line as a boys camp. Trooper Island has since been converted to a co-ed camp which currently serves approximately 700 boys and girls ages 10 to 12 selected from across the commonwealth at to attend camp at no charge during the summer months. Those children who have been chosen may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a camp. In addition to regular camping dates there are special camps held during the summer help children with PKU (phenylketonuria), Heart Complications and a Hispanic camp. Trooper Island is a non-profit charitable corporation, which operates solely from contributions and charitable activities.
