KSP Highway Safety Branch News Release

Seventeen Die On Kentucky Roadways First Week of January (Jan. 1 through Jan. 7, 2008)

Date of News Release: 01/07/08

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that Seventeen people died in thirteen separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Tuesday, Jan. 1 through Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008.

Fifteen of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and thirteen of the victims were not wearing seat belts. There was one fatality involving a motorcycle and one involving a pedestrian. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet. Three of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol.

One quadruple-fatality crash occurred in Bell County and one double-fatality crash occurred in Ohio County. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Boone, Bourbon, Clark, Clinton, Jefferson, Madison, Mason, Pike (2) and Warren (2) counties.

The quadruple-fatality crash was reported by Kentucky State Police Post 10 by a trooper patrolling KY 92 in Bell County when he came upon a single vehicle crash that was fully engulfed in flames. The Bell County Fire Department arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire and it was determined that there were four bodies in the vehicle. State forensic pathologist Doctor Emily Craig was called to the scene to assist with the investigation. The four subjects were taken to the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab in Frankfort for autopsy to confirm the identities of the bodies. Detective Mike Cornett determined that the operator of the vehicle lost control in a curve and left the roadway, striking a tree coming to final rest at the area of impact with the tree. None of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Through Jan. 7, preliminary statistics* indicate that 17 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2008. This is 4 more than reported for this time period in 2007. Of the 15 motor vehicle fatalities, 13 victims were not wearing seat belts. There has been 1 motorcycle fatality and they were not wearing a helmet. One pedestrian has been killed. A total of 3 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
