Commercial Vehicle Crashes Into Pedway Overpass on EKU Campus

Date of News Release: 09/09/2016

Richmond, Ky. (September 9, 2016) Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Aaron Stidham investigated a collision that occurred on Lancaster Avenue on Eastern Kentucky University's campus. Preliminary investigation indicates a 2006 Peterbilt truck, belonging to Rock Trucking LLC., located in Clay City, KY., was traveling north on Lancaster Avenue, where the operator had just off loaded a container. It appears the operator, Randall Smith from Clay City, KY, failed to lower the boom on the commercial vehicle after off-loading the container. As Mr. Smith was traveling north on Lancaster Avenue, the boom made contact with the pedway overpass, causing significant damage. Mr. Smith declined medical treatment on scene; however, another motorist's vehicle traveling south on Lancaster Avenue was struck by debris from the collision and had to be towed from scene.

Lancaster Avenue around the pedway overpass will be shut down to traffic for an unknown, but possibly extended amount of time.

Officer Stidham was assisted on scene by Officer Charles Tinsley, Officer Erik Stallsworth, Madison County EMS, Eastern Kentucky University police department, and Richmond police department.
