Traffic Stop Leads to DUI, Stolen Gun and Drug Charge Arrest

(Madison County, KY) - Kentucky State Police Officer Eric Stallsworth observed a white, KIA Optima traveling south bound on Interstate 75 in Berea. The vehicle was unable to maintain its' lane of travel, and a traffic stop was made. Officer Stallsworth made contact with the driver, who has been identified as Matthew L. McGinnis of Huntsville, Alabama. Upon further investigation, Officer Stallsworth was able to determine that Mr. McGinnis was under the influence. After field sobriety tests, he was arrested. Once consent to search the vehicle was received, the officer located a syringe that was loaded with an unknown substance. Also during the search, a concealed handgun that had been reported stolen out of Tennessee was found under the driver’s seat. After Mr. McGinnis consented to a blood test, he was taken to and lodged at the Madison County Detention Center. He has been charged with the following:

  • Failure to or improper signal
  • Careless Driving
  • No other state registration receipt
  • Failure to produce insurance card
  • Driving under the influence – first offense
  • Possession of controlled substance – first degree, first offense, drug unspecified
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Receiving stolen property – firearm
