Pursuit Ends in Arrest of Shoplifting Suspect

(Morehead, KY) -- On 03/12/2014, the Ashland Police Department received a call from Wal-Mart of Ashland of a possible shoplifter running from Loss Prevention and fleeing the area in a Gold Honda Accord. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Jesse Staggs located the vehicle in the area, and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle, driven by Stephanie R. Avery, 38, of Ironton, OH, failed to yield to Officer Staggs' emergency warning lights and siren, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. After failing to stop for three miles, the driver was boxed in behind a vehicle that stopped at a red light, and the driver was removed from the vehicle and arrested. Several stolen articles were located inside the vehicle. Ashland Police Department, along with Wal-Mart Loss Prevention, is working the theft investigation. Officer Staggs charged Ms. Avery with:

  • Fleeing and Evading (Motor Vehicle) 2nd Degree
  • DUI 1st
  • Reckless Driving
  • Following another vehicle too closely
  • License to be in possession
  • Driving on Expired Operator's License
  • Failure of owner to maintain insurance
  • Failure to wear seat belts
  • Disregarding traffic control device

She has been lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center.
