Fatal Crash in Harlan County

(Cumberland, KY) - On Monday May 19th 2014 around 12-noon officer Chad Alexander with the Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement responded to a fatal crash located on Clover Lick road in Cumberland Kentucky.
Upon arrival and through investigation Officer Alexander determined that 61 year old Michael Surber of Cumberland was operating a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM traveling south on Clover Lick road when he crossed the center line and struck a 2009 International tractor trailer coal truck being operated by 40 year old Charles Carter of Dry Den Virginia.
Surber was pronounced dead on the scene and Carter was not injured during the crash. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors and Surber was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. Toxicology reports are pending on both operators.
Assisting on scene: Sgt. Mike Taylor KSP-vehicle enforcement, Troopers Post 10 Harlan, Tri City Volunteer Fire Department and the Harlan Co Corners office. Officer Chad Alexander continues the investigation.
