Commercial Vehicle Hazmat Crash/Spill in McCreary County

Date of News Release: 03/28/2013

(Whitley City, KY) -- On Thursday March 28th 2013 around 6PM officer Mike Hamblin with the Kentucky State Police Vehicle Enforcement responded to a single vehicle accident involving a commercial vehicle located on US27 near the 14 mile marker in McCreary County Kentucky.

Upon arrival and through investigation Hamlin found that 53 year old Marty R. White of Foster Kentucky was operating a 2001 Volvo tractor trailer on US27. While attempting a right hand turn, a small portion of the roadway broke loose causing the trailer to over turn spilling approximately 10 gallons of Sodium Hydroxide Solution.

A portion of US27 near Whitley City was shut down for several hours and traffic was re-routed around KY700 and KY1045 to avoid the crash site. Hazmat crews worked to contain the spill and supervise the clean up of this hazardous material.

No drugs or alcohol are suspected factors in the crash and White was wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident.

Assisting on scene: CVE Ofc. Joey Ray Caldwell, Robert Mitchell, Sgt Greg Reams, McCreary Co Sheriffs Department, Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife, North McCreary Co Fire Department, Hazmat 12-Somerset/Pulaski, Environmental Protection Agency and Kentucky Highway Department. Officer Mike Hamblin continues the investigation.
