Money Seizure along I-75 in Richmond

(Richmond, KY) -- On 11/06/2012 around 3:00 p.m., Sgt. Nathan Day with the Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement initiated a traffic stop the 87 mile marker of I-75 on a 2005 Toyota Tacoma after the driver failed to signal. Sgt. Day and other CVE Officers were conducting a traffic detail in the Richmond area along I-75 when the violation occurred. Upon stopping the vehicle, Sgt. Day made contact with three men in the cab of the pickup. The men stated that they were driving from Harlan, KY to Lexington, KY so one of the men could get a bus ride to Detroit, MI. With consent to search the vehicle, a bag containing $24,110 in cash was discovered. The CVE Officers also discovered several articles of drug paraphernalia in the pickup. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for DUI and a passenger was cited for possessing drug paraphernalia. The men stated that the money did not belong to them and it was turned over to the State Police. Sgt. Day was assisted by Officer Jed Hudson, other CVE Officers and Troopers from KSP Post 7 - Richmond.
