Haz-Mat Injury Collision on I-64 Westbound

(Morehead, KY) -- On Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 9:46 p.m. Kentucky State Police in Morehead received several calls in reference to a two vehicle accident involving a CMV carrying hazardous materials at the 137 mile marker on I-64 westbound. Rebecca Katz, 56 was operating a 2008 Mazda passenger car westbound on I-64 when she attempted to merge into traffic, while attempting to merge into traffic Ms. Katz struck a 2008 Kenworth class A commercial vehicle operated by Tonia M. Kennedy, 52 who was traveling westbound on 1-64 at exit 137. Ms. Katz made contact with the front right tire of Ms. Kennedy's 2008 Kenworth causing her to lose control. Ms. Katz then struck a tool box located on the trailer of Ms. Kennedy's Kenworth and coming to a final stop on the westbound shoulder. Ms. Kennedy was transporting a military load carrying Class 1.1 explosives UN0397 Rockets, liquid fueled bursting charge. The Haz-Mat load was not damaged as a result of the accident. Rebecca Katz was transported from the scene by Rowan County Emergency Medical Service to Saint Claire Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. KSP-CVE Officer Dennis Johnson was assisted on scene by Trooper Christopher Jones, Trooper Jared Wagner, Rowan County Fire Department, Rowan County Emergency Medical Service and Morehead Police Department. Accident remains under investigation by KSP-CVE Officer Dennis Johnson.
