Haz-Mat Injury Collision on KY 9 AA Lewis County

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On Monday, May 21, 2012 Kentucky State Police Post 8 received a call of an injury accident on KY 9 AA Highway at the intersection of the Grayson Spur in Lewis County. At approximately 8:59 am a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer, operated by William C. Esham, 18, of Morehead, KY, was traveling west on KY 10 approaching the intersection of the Grayson Spur and KY 9 when his vehicle departed its lane of travel, crossing the roadway and striking the rear axles of a semi tractor trailer that was traveling east on KY 10.

This tractor trailer was operated by Daniel A. Barth, 44, of Hamilton, Ohio who was transporting a Hazardous Material load of Sodium Hydroxide which is a Class 8 corrosive material. Barth was transporting this load under the authority of K A Steel Chemicals of Lemont, IL. The hazardous cargo was secure inside the tanker which was damaged in the collision but was not leaking. The cargo was offloaded to another tanker brought to the scene by K A Steel Chemicals.

Esham was airlifted from the scene by Air Evac to the University of Cincinnati where he is listed in critical condition. Barth was uninjured in the collision.

Trooper Chad Bowling was the initial responding unit to the scene and was assisted by Black Oak Fire Department, Lewis County Sheriffs Department and the Lewis County Department of Emergency Services. Kentucky State Police Officer Larry Farris was dispatched to the scene to conduct a post crash inspection of the commercial vehicle and investigate the collision.

This collision remains under investigation by Officer Larry Farris of the Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
