Traffic Crash / Interstate Closure in Laurel County

Date of News Release: 01/03/2012

(Corbin, KY) -- On Monday January 2nd 2012 at 4:25 P.M. Ofc. Steven Douglas and Ofc. Joey Ray Caldwell of the Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Enforcement responded to a 3 vehicle crash located on I-75 at 28 mile marker in Laurel County Kentucky.

Through investigation officers learned that 51 yr old William B. Smith of Gate City VA was operating a 2000 International Cargo Tanker when he lost control striking a white 1999 Chevy caviler operated by 49 yr old Lisa G. Estep of Corbin. That impact sent Estep's vehicle into a cream color 1986 Ford Thunderbird operated by 53yr old Shirley M. Laing of Woodbine.

The impact damaged the tanker, spilling several thousand gallons of Fuel Oil (A.K.A. Off Road Diesel) onto the interstate causing a several hour road closure while clean-up crews worked to clean the fuel from the roadway.

Snow covered roads were factors in the collision and Laing was the only person transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Assisting on Scene: Ofc. Joey Ray Caldwell, West Knox Fire & Rescue, Laurel Co Emergency Mgn. Laurel Co EMS and the KY Environmental Protection Agency. Officer Steven Douglas Continues the investigation.
