KSP Officer Shoots Armed Robbery Suspect

Louisville, KY (July 29,2012) A KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer shot an armed robbery suspect on I-65 early this morning.

Around 1:26 this morning KSP Post 4 E-town received 911 calls of an armed robbery taking place at the Pilot truck stop in Sonora, KY. The suspects information along with the suspects vehicle information was given to officers. The suspect 20 year old Aaron Hart of Hodgenville was headed north on I-65, when a KSP officer working Jefferson county was headed south and spotted Mr. Harts vehicle around 2:00 am. The officer was able to get turned around and catch up to Mr. Hart on I-65 at the Watterson Expressway. Once Mr. Hart seen the officer he immediately stopped his vehicle. At this time the officer exited his vehicle and made contact with Mr. Hart, who was ignoring the officers commands to see his hands and exit the vehicle. Mr. Hart then reached for his firearm and had it in his hand. The officer fired one shot striking Mr. Hart. A firearm and undisclosed amount of cash was retrieved from the scene.

Mr. Hart was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital where he is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. Mr. Hart faces numerous charges which include robbery 1st, wanton endangerment 1st, resisting arrest, and burglary 3rd.

The Kentucky State Police confirms that officer Jared Newberry with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division was the officer that fired his weapon in an attempt to arrest an armed robbery suspect(Aaron Hart). Mr. Hart of Hodgenville was shot and injured this morning on I-65 north at the Watterson Expressway after he robbed a Pilot truck stop in Sonora,KY with a firearm.

Officer Newberry has been employed with the Kentucky State Police for 1 1/2 years, and at this time is on leave per KSP policy pending the investigation.
