Date of News Release: 08/03/2011

A tractor trailer jackknife

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On Wednesday August 3, 2011 at 11:47 AM a Class A tractor trailer jackknifed at the intersection of US 460 and KY 11 in Montgomery County approximately 1/2 mile north of Interstate 64. The commercial vehicle operated by Clarence H. Birchfield, 73, of Sardinia Ohio, was transporting a load of feed from Winchester Kentucky to Winchester Ohio under the operating authority of Winchester AG Service. Mr. Birchfield rounded a curve with a downward grade and observed a vehicle slowing to make a sudden left turn onto US 460 West at the intersection of KY 11. Mr. Birchfield braked on the wet roadway resulting in an accelerated jackknife of his commercial vehicle and left the right side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. The passenger side fuel tank of the commercial vehicle ruptured during the jackknife and resulted in a loss of diesel fuel onto the ground. The Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection was dispatched to the scene and supervised the cleanup by PECCO. The collision was investigated by Officer Jason Townsend of the Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. Assisting personnel at the scene were members of the Montgomery County Fire/EMS, Montgomery County Emergency Management and the Mount Sterling Police Department. Mr. Birchfield was not injured in the crash. The westbound lane of US 460 and northbound lane of KY 11 were closed fro several hours during the cleanup and removal of the commercial vehicle from the ditch.
