On December 31, 1982 in the Harshell community of Breathitt County, Virgil Napier was murdered while visiting the residence of Orville Campbell. According to witnesses at the scene, an unknown male subject came to the residence of Orville Campbell, knocked on the door and asked for Virgil Napier. When Mr. Napier acknowledged to the man that he was Virgil, the man pulled a handgun and began shooting. The assailant fled the scene in a 1973 Chevrolet Nova, which was recovered approximately two (2) miles from the scene. To date the perpetrator(s) have not been identified, and brought to trial.
