On May 28, 1979 Burton Jones and a passenger were traveling west on KY 80 in Perry County, when a shot was fired into his vehicle from a passing red Monte Carlo with a white vinyl top, striking Burton Jones killing him instantly.
It is believed that this murder is related to a coal strike and that Burton Jones was possibly killed by mistake. It is also believed a connection may exist between this case and the Donnie R Gibson Murder in December 1979.
To date the perpetrator(s) have not been identified, and brought to trial.
