Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer (left) joined Frankfort-resident Roy Childs on Oct. 31 at the unveiling of a road sign in memory of his father, David Thomas Childs, a Kentucky State Police Water Patrol Officer who perished on April 8, 1972. Childs and Tpr. James McNeely were searching for two teens reported missing on a canoe trip on the Kentucky River. Rain-swollen currents swept the officers' boat over the Lock 4 dam in Frankfort. The missing youths were found later unhurt. The sign will mark KY 1784, Coffee Tree Road from KY 1659, Glenns Creek Road to KY 676, East/West Connector in Franklin County, which has been designated Officer David T. Childs Memorial Highway by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "This is a fitting tribute to a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice of service over self," said Brewer. "We salute him and all those who chose a life that makes a difference."
