Operation B.L.U.E. Lights Nets 3,500 DUI and Drug Arrests

Date of News Release: 09/05/2012

(Frankfort, KY.) Operation B.L.U.E. Lights was the summer enforcement campaign for the Kentucky State Police that began June 1 and concluded Labor Day weekend. The campaign was designed to bring attention to unsafe driving behaviors in an effort to reduce traffic deaths on Kentucky roadways. The agency held 1,640 safety checkpoints across the state that produced 2,072 DUI arrests, 1,462 drug arrests and the apprehension of 41 fugitives. There were 8,932 seat belt citations written and 933 child seat violations during this time period.

KSP Operations Major Mike Crawford was pleased with the results of the campaign and said the agency will continue efforts like this to curb the number of fatalities on Kentucky roadways.

"No matter where you traveled during the summer, the high visibility patrols and traffic safety checkpoints reminded motorists to exercise caution when operating motor vehicles," he said. "The bottom line is preventing traffic crashes and saving lives."

B.L.U.E. is an acronym designed to remind drivers to focus on these driving-related attributes:

B = Basic traveling safety and vehicle maintenance
L = Lower speed in work zone areas
U = Undivided attention on the road and look for motorcycles
E = Enforcement of speed, DUI and occupant protection

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
