Sixteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(Aug. 22 through Aug. 28)
Date of Release: 08/29/05
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 16 people died in 14 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, August 22 through Sunday, August 28.
Of the 14 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in five of the crashes and 12 of the victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was a pedestrian.
Laurel and Morgan counties each reported one double fatality crash. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Allen, Barren, Casey, Daviess, Fayette, Hardin, Jefferson, Madison, Meade, Metcalfe, Pike and Webster counties.
Through August 28, 2005, a total of 590* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 28 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Three hundred and forty-four of these 590 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
