Thirteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(May 30 through June 5)
Date of Release: 06/06/05
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 13 people died in 13 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, May 30 through Sunday, June 5.
Of the 13 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in four of the crashes and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Two of the fatalities were riding motorcycles and one was a pedestrian.
Two single fatality crashes were reported in Jefferson County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Barren, Bell, Boone, Calloway, Carter, Grant, Hancock, Madison, Oldham, Powell and Taylor counties.
Through June 5, 2005, a total of 355* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is the same number reported for this time period in 2004. Two hundred and six of these 355 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
